Miley Cyrus Opens Up About Why She Got Sober Six Months Ago In Revealing New Interview

"I want to wake up feeling ready.”

Miley Cyrus has revealed that looking into her family history was a big reason why she decided to get sober last year.

In a new chat with Variety, the 27-year-old said she's been sober for the past six months, and that the decision to abstain from drugs (Cyrus has admitted to being a heavy weed-smoker in the past) and alcohol was initially because she was recovering from a vocal surgery that she had in November 2019.

“But I had been thinking a lot about my mother,” the singer said. “My mum was adopted, and I inherited some of the feelings she had, the abandonment feelings and wanting to prove that you’re wanted and valuable.”

She continued, saying her dad, Billy Ray Cyrus, also had a challenging upbringing. His parents had divorced when he was three, Miley said, and he’d had to raise himself.

“I did a lot of family history, which has a lot of addiction and mental health challenges. So just going through that and asking, ‘Why am I the way that I am?’ By understanding the past, we understand the present and the future much more clearly. I think therapy is great.”

Miley said her new sober lifestyle has been “really important” to her because she’s wanted to “polish up” on her craft, too. And, as for the stigma of abstaining? She's gotten it before, but she said she doesn't need to prove herself to anyone. “It’s like, ‘honey, you can call me a lot of things, but I know that I’m fun.’”

“The thing that I love about it is waking up 100%, 100% of the time,” Miley added. “I don’t want to wake up feeling groggy. I want to wake up feeling ready.”

Miley, who's currently dating fellow musician Cody Simpson, split from ex-husband Liam Hemsworth in August 2019. In her song "Slide Away", she alluded to the fact she'd supposedly wanted to distance herself from his 'whiskey and pills' lifestyle.

"I want my house in the hills / don’t want the whiskey and pills," she sang. "Woke up one day it had turned to dust / baby we were found but now we’re lost / so it’s time to let it go". Interestinggg.
