An Utterly Exhausting Play-By-Play Of Demi Lovato & Max Ehrich's Relationship & Breakup

Demi Lovato and Max Ehrich had one hectic breakup. Ahead, we share all that went down – in excruciating detail.

Demi Lovato and Max Ehrich joined the long list of celebrity relationships to fall by the wayside this year. But their breakup got far messier than anyone anticipated.

For those invested, Max and Demi's car-crash relationship has been difficult to track. Here, we break down what exactly went on between the pair, from the blissful beach engagement photoshoot all the way to Erich's bizzarre staged meltdown on the same shoreline months later.

March: Demi Lovato and Max Ehrich meet

We don't have exact dates, but sometime in March, Demi Lovato and Max Ehrich meet and begin dating.

We know this because Max shared a picture of him with her dogs, along with another thirst trap selfie snap with a caption alluding to the fact he had moved in with her: “When u realize u should’ve packed more for your quarantine stay”. Demi commented: “Fine by me.” It was on.

April - May: Demi and Max go public(ish) on social media

Around this time, the couple appear to be going from strength to strength. Us Weekly reported their relationship is “off to a strong start”; Demi accidentally appeared in his Instagram Live (which was actually quite cute); and he commented heart eye emojis on a swimsuit Instagram shot of hers. The icing on the cake comes when Demi shares a clip of herself and her new boyfriend in the "Stuck With U" video, writing alongside it: “Happy to be a part of something so special right now. Like, really, REALLY happy if you can’t tell….” Max’s caption on the same clip? “My whole heart.”

July: Demi Lovato and Max Ehrich announce their engagement

After months of more cute comments and chatty sources spilling on how swell everything is between Demi and Max, he pops the question on a beach in Malibu.

September 12: Oh dear, Max's old tweets resurface

All appears to be going well with the engagement until.. Max’s old tweets resurface. Turns out, the dude was pretty thirsty for Demi's actress peers. Very thirsty. Before he’d met her, he’d tweeted about his strong fondness for a heap of other young female celebs that weren’t her, including Selena Gomez (Lovato's former co-star), Miley Cyrus, Gigi Hadid and Ariana Grande.

September 13: Demi Lovato weighs in on the tweets

Demi Lovato comes to Max Ehrich's defence.

In a series of notes on her Instagram Stories, she claims Max’s old tweets, including those pitting her against real-life friend-foe Selena, were fake. “It’s really sad when people FAKE images to put women against each other,” she wrote. “If women have conflict that’s between them NOT YOU.”

September 24: The couple break up

So, while it did seem like Demi was in support of Max, it appeared that the tweets affected the relationship. Shortly after a Page Six source claimed a breakup was imminent, saying, “It’s not over yet, but it’s on its way there”. People and E! published stories claiming they had fully split.

“It was a tough decision, but Demi and Max have decided to go their separate ways to focus on their respective careers. They have respect and love for one another and will always cherish the time they spent together,” they wrote.

Neither Max nor Demi comment publicly on the breakup.

September 25: Details about the split come out

Turns out, it was Max’s “self-promotion” that led to their relationship demise. “In the beginning, Max was super careful about self-promotion [and] things with his career, but once they got engaged, he really hit the gas pedal and wanted to make the most out of his career opportunities. He felt more comfortable doing so after they were fiancés and had a little bit more of a leg up.”

An E! source also says Lovato and Ehrich were “arguing a lot” right before he travelled to Atlanta to film a new project and that Demi “didn’t know who Max truly was and didn’t think he had good intentions”.

September 26: Demi Lovato deletes all traces of Max Ehrich from social media

Proving just how messy the whole split situation is getting, Demi unfollows Max on Instagram and deletes all photos of him, too.

Meanwhile, Max writes on Instagram Stories: “Imagine finding out the status of your relationship through a tabloid,” clearl inferring that he didn't know about Demi breaking it off with him before the reports came out.

September 27: Max keeps the headlines coming

Max hops back on Instagram Stories, this time with: “Please stop trying to ‘thank you, next’ me. For I’m just a human being who has to go to work tomorrow a.m. where there are families with kids relying on me.…To this moment…we haven’t spoken over the phone…we haven’t even officially ended anything to each other, literally. I’m here in real time with y’all. I love Demetria and just want her to be healthy and safe.”

A source close to Demi told E! Max was lying and that she had in fact told him about the breakup beforehand. They reckoned Max was “just trying to stay relevant.”

And hey, if the shoe fits.. Max's next move is to post Demi Lovato's music on his Instagram stories, writing: “Demetria is THEE best female vocalist alive. And everyone should know it. She inspires me every day and is an INCREDIBLE human being. I know it’s not her writing these stories, it’s a machine. I love her unconditionally.”

September 28: Demi finally comments on the split herself – sort of

Another E! source (quite possibly Demi herself) told ‘em the singer “wants no contact with Max at this point” and “is completely embarrassed at the way he’s been acting and putting their relationship on blast via social media”.

Apparently, Max had “tried to reach out to her” and was “in denial” their relationship was over. His “erratic behaviour” was now starting to be worrying to Demi.

September 30: Demi releases new music, a breakup song

Demi drops a new tune called "Still Have Me" and it's almost without a doubt about Lovato and Ehrich's breakup.

In it, she croons: “It feels like someone’s stolen / All the light I ever had” and “Everything around me shattered / All the highs are now just lows / But it doesn’t even matter / ’Cause I’d rather be alone.

October 7: Demi is officially over it

Still with us? We’re nearly there.

A source told Us Weekly, Demi has had enough and is basically erasing him from her life. “Demi has been acting as though she was never engaged to Max and that their relationship never happened,” the source said. “She is still not speaking to him and fully cut him out.”

As for Max, Us Weekly reports that he's “in shambles about the whole situation”. “It’s been so hard for him because he’s in Atlanta and trying his best to focus on his film [Southern Gospel], God, and Jesus,” they said.

October 11: The papparazzi miraculously find Max Ehrich alone at the beach, crying.

TMZ shares pics and a video of him dramatically sobbing at the beach where he proposed to Demi. The clip shows him crying, talking on the phone and throwing seaweed back into the ocean. Reader, there is very little chance that this was not staged.

He then hops on Instagram Live to sing a song by none other than… Selena Gomez (her tune "Ice Cream" with BLACKPINK). Is Max.. okay?

October 13: Demi gets lawyers involved & Max is set to release a song about her

We’ve reached the end – well, for now, anyway.

The latest: Demi’s now gotten lawyers involved because she’s apparently “having all sorts of issues with Max not leaving her alone”.

Also, Max is releasing a song about the night they first met, according to TMZ. The tune apparently “touches on him falling for Demi right off the bat”. He “sings about how he couldn’t sleep because he knew he wanted to be with her forever”.

So there you have it: Demi Lovato and Max Ehrich's exhaustive love story has come to a dramatic close. You're officially up to date – well done! We might have a little lie down now..
