Lorde Picked The Coldest Day Of The Year To Drop New Summer Single "Solar Power"

The beloved New Zealand pop icon has returned today with her first song in four years.

It’s been a long, long time coming, but Lorde has finally put fans out of their collective misery with the release of her highly-anticipated new song, “Solar Power”.

The song, primarily led by raw acoustic guitar, is an unabashed love letter to the almighty sun and almighty summer (the superior season, Lorde says so!). Interesting, then, that she chose to drop it on June 11, which happens to be the same day the entire east coast of Australia is experiencing a cold snap. Where’s that Southern Hemisphere solidarity, Ms. Ella? Hmm!

Like her last album, 2017’s Melodrama, “Solar Power” is produced by Jack Antonoff. But in a little surprise for music lovers: the song features backing vocals from both Phoebe Bridgers and Clairo! A real all-star cast.

In a newsletter sent to fans, Lorde revealed that her third album will be titled Solar Power as well, though we don’t have a release date just yet.

“There’s someone I want you to meet,” she wrote.

“Her feet are bare at all times. She’s sexy, playful, feral, and free. She’s a modern girl in a deadstock bikini, in touch with her past and her future, vibrating at the highest level when summer comes around. Her skin is glowing, her lovers are many. I’m completely obsessed with her, and soon you will be too.

It’s my divine pleasure to be introducing you, at long last, to my third studio album, SOLAR POWER.”

She described the album as “a celebration of the natural world, an attempt at immortalising the deep, transcendent feelings I have when I’m outdoors."

“In times of heartache, grief, deep love, or confusion, I look to the natural world for answers. I’ve learnt to breathe out, and tune in. This is what came through.”

Lorde said we can look to the “natural calendar” for clues about the album, but for right now we’ll be imagining guzzling a mojito with the sand between our toes, thank you very much.
