'MTV Unplugged' Is Back With A New Set From Tash Sultana

Introducing our latest artist for MTV Unplugged Melbourne: it's the wildly talented singer/songwriter/producer/engineer Tash Sultana.

There's something about the words MTV Unplugged that evokes some serious '80s and '90s nostalgia; even if you weren't actually around at the time. The legendary concert series, showcasing (for the first time) artists playing only acoustic instruments in a stripped-back setting, famously hosted the biggest musical talent in the world. From Kurt Cobain's last televised performance in 1993 and a mammoth set from The Cranberries in 1995 to Lauren Hill breaking down in tears in 2001, the intimacy of MTV Unplugged has given rise to the music world's most breathtaking cultural moments.

Fast forward a couple of decades, and Australia's most talented musicians have gotten in on the fun, alongside global legends like Miley Cyrus and BTS. So far, local artists as diverse as Gang of Youths, Amy Shark, DMA's, The Reubens and Courtney Barnett have  rolled up to deliver intimate and breathtaking MTV Unplugged Melbourne performances. (Paul Kelly dropped by, too.)

Thankfully, there are more good times to be had. MTV Australia can this morning confirm that our next act to perform in MTV Unplugged Melbourne concert series is singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Tash Sultana.

"To be able to play an MTV Unplugged set is pretty special," Sultana told MTV Australia. "It's something that everyone knows about so I'm really looking forward to being part of it. Also, to do it in my hometown [of Melbourne] is a massive bonus."

As a multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter, producer and engineer, Tash is one of hardest working musos in Australia. From a viral bedroom recording of "Jungle" to sold-out international tours, their star is on the up and up.

Tash's sophomore album, Terra Firma, released in February 2021, debuted as #1 on the ARIA charts and comes steeped in Tash's trademark looped and layered jams, blending a fusion of soul, funk, R&B, folk, rock, and hip-hop. The album, recorded, engineered, performed, arranged and produced by Tash comes four years after their ARIA-winning debut album, Flow State, featuring their 2x Platinum single "Jungle" and the Platinum-selling "Mystik."

MTV Unplugged Melbourne: Tash Sultana is slated to be the sixth episode of the award-winning MTV Unplugged franchise filmed down under. It will be filmed in front of a small live audience on Tuesday 4 May at Melbourne's iconic Chapel off Chapel.

In the meantime, stay with us for the latest on MTV Unplugged and a whole bunch of exclusive performances.
