Everything we know about 'Euphoria' Season 2

Season 2 of the hit HBO show is scheduled to return soon. Freak out accordingly.

Let’s have it right: we all loved (and binged) HBO's Euphoria season 1. It was an instant favourite, led by the amazing Zendaya as Rue Bennett, a non-binary teen addict navigating her way through high school and teenage life. The other standout stars that also more than held their weight included Sydney Sweeney as Cassie Howard and Hunter Schafer as Jules Vaughn.

With actors like these, show creator Sam Levinson was able to build an eye-opening and confrontational show. Loosely based off an Israeli mini-series of the same name, HBO’s Euphoria season 1 follows a group of high-schoolers as they experience sex, drugs, friendships, love, identity, trauma and the a myriad of other challenges.

Euphoria season 1 has received widely positive reviews and minor controversy, with some critics deeming the nudity and sexual content as excessive. (Please.)

Here’s all the details about the upcoming Euphoria season 2 including its release date, casting, filming locations and then some – you’re welcome.

Is ‘Euphoria’ Season 2 returning?

Yes! Good news for all the die-hard fans, Euphoria season 2 is officially incoming. Despite the producers initially wanting the second season to be returning late 2020, COVID threw a spanner in the works for the show's production and as a result, season 2 has been super delayed. It’s no doubt that the wait will be worth it after we were left on a massive cliffhanger at the close of the first season. You know the one…

Will the original ‘Euphoria’ cast be returning?

Given everything that happened at the end of the first season you can't be blamed for thinking we may not see Rue (Zendaya) or Fezco (Angus Cloud) return for the second season. However rest assured as it is safe to say these staple cast members will return to your screens again for season two.

*SPOILERS AHEAD*

If you’re not up to date, Sam Levison confirmed that Rue Bennet didn't die at the close of last season, which is great news for Zendaya fans. And you may be left wondering about Jules (Hunter Schafer), who left town on a train. In a chat with Entertainment Weekly, Schafer confirmed Jules would be back in some capacity for season 2.

Schafer also stated that she wants to see Jules continue to work on herself in upcoming seasons. “I think I want to continue to see Jules work on herself in that she’s still got some major issues, and to continue to dissect that and feel it out. I think she learns from experiencing things. And so to experience what she needs to, without being messy, that’s from the sort of loving parent/sister relationship I feel like I have with her. That’s what I want for her, although who knows how it will play out. I’m sure it will be more messy than I would hope for her,” Schafer said.

Of course, we should expect to see the rest of the breakthrough ensemble cast, including Barbie Ferreira as Kat Hernandez; Jacob Elordi as Nate Jacobs; Sydney Sweeney as Cassie Howard; Alexa Demie as Maddy Perez; Maude Apatow as Lexi Howard; and Storm Reid as Gia Bennett, return for season 2.

Who is joining the cast for 'Euphoria' season 2?

Not much is known about new additions to the cast. Here’s what little we do know.

We know that Kelvin Harrison Jr. will be joining for the second season. However Harrison was a bit cagey about his character, refusing to even speak to the role name or share a plotline. Harrison Jr. did say he’s “never seen a character like this, period,” and added, “I can almost argue that it has not been done. It’s interesting, it is definitely a character of the time, and that’s all I got. He’s interesting."

It has also been revealed that HBO is searching for an actor for a new leading role in the hit show. According to the expired listing on Backstage, they team were looking to cast a "Black male actor, aged 18–25" to play a 17-year-old character named Jamieson. It also references that the actor also "must be comfortable with sexual scenes and nudity" so there's a chance he's playing a love interest for Rue or Jules.

Is 'Euphoria' season 2 filming now?

Yep, filming has begun for season 2 of Euphoria. HBO president Casey Bloys confirmed  Euphoria would begin filming season 2 in "early 2021".

On February 17, that Backstage listing revealed that production for Euphoria season 2 is beginning on April 5 in Los Angeles.

Zendaya herself confirmed she was officially back on set on May 5, 2021. The actress shared some inside pics from the set to her Instagram Stories. One shows actor Angus Cloud (Fezco) perched on a counter; with the caption, "Missed this kid."

When will 'Euphoria season 2 be released in Australia?

While the release date has not been confirmed, Aussies can expect Euphoria season 2 to hit our screens either very late 2021 or early 2022. Similar to the first season, Australian viewers can expect to watch this on Foxtel either live or on demand through Foxtel Now, Foxtel Go and on BINGE. (Where, coincidentally, you can also catch MTV shows.)

What can I expect from season 2 of 'Euphoria'?

It is almost certain we can expect a crazy storyline in season 2. Sydney Sweeney (Cassie) teased at a season 2 story arc that is apparently so over-the-top that it shocked even her.

"I can tease that, when you ask about season 2, my heart drops. In a you-guys-have-no-idea-what-you’re-going-to-watch way. Cassie really needs to get her shit together. I can’t say anything else," Sydney Sweeney told Stylecaster.

Zendaya also confirmed that a "beautiful" second season had been written. But no other concrete plot details have been shared yet.

Will there be more seasons of 'Euphoria'?

Further seasons of Euphoria have not been confirmed just yet. After the sensational hit of that was the first season, it’s likely that Euphoria could have a long future with plenty more seasons to come. Finger’s crossed, hey.

What have Euphoria's cast members been up to in between filming?

America has been hit hard by the coronavirus, with COVID uncertainty halting the production of Euphoria. Rightly or wrongly, Australia has become a semi-haven for people seeking more freedoms and less COVID – this includes show star Jacob Elordi. The actor has reportedly purchased a house in Byron Bay (along with every other famous person in Australia).

Jacob Elordi is also starring in the final instalment of his hit Netflix franchise, The Kissing Booth 3, with ex Joey King. Joey King has said on numerous occasions that she wasn't going to let the awkwardness or working with ex Jacob Elordi get in the way of The Kissing Booth, but did admit that working together "wasn't easy".

Zendaya has been killing it on just about every front, from awards wins at the Emmys to landing starring roles in huge blockbuster films, including the Spider-Man franchise with Tom Holland. Recently, Zendaya and her Spider-Man co-stars, Tom Holland and Jacob Batalon sent fans into a frenzy by each pretending to announce the official title of the new Spider-Man film but instead, dropping fake names. Good one.

On top of this it seems Zendaya has been working on a secret romantic drama film through quarantine alongside John David Washington for Netflix. And did you guys hear those rumours she’s dating Tom Holland too? (Please let this be true.)
